Maui United Way, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to creating positive community impact, seeks a skilled and experienced Director of Development. As a vital team member, you will be crucial in advancing our mission to improve lives across Maui County.     

The Director of Development is a key leadership role at Maui United Way, tasked with driving the strategic direction and execution of comprehensive fundraising initiatives. As a visionary and results-oriented professional, the Director of Development is responsible for cultivating a culture of philanthropy, fostering meaningful donor relationships, and securing the financial resources necessary to advance our mission.


An individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below at a satisfactory level:

  • Strategic Fundraising Leadership: Develop and implement a dynamic fundraising strategy aligned with the organization's goals and objectives. Identify and pursue diverse funding streams, including grants, individual donations, corporate partnerships, and special events.
  • Donor Cultivation and Stewardship: Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, sponsors, and funding partners. Create personalized engagement plans to enhance donor loyalty and long-term commitment to the organization. Ensure timely and meaningful communication with supporters.
  • Team Management: Lead and inspire a high-performing development team. Provide guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to team members. Foster a collaborative and results-driven work environment.
  • Grant Writing and Proposal Development: Oversee the development of compelling grant proposals and applications. Collaborate with program managers to ensure alignment between funding opportunities and organizational priorities. Track and report on grant deliverables.
  • Budget Oversight: Work collaboratively with the finance team to develop and manage the development budget. Monitor and analyze financial performance related to fundraising activities. Implement strategies to optimize resource allocation and maximize fundraising efficiency.
  • Board and Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with the board of directors, executive leadership, and other stakeholders to advance fundraising goals. Provide regular updates on fundraising progress and engage board members in donor cultivation efforts.
  • Event Planning and Execution: Oversee the planning and execution of fundraising events. Develop strategies to maximize event revenue, engage participants, and increase awareness of the organization.


Minimum requirements include:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., nonprofit management, business, communications, or a related discipline).
  • Master's degree or certification in a related field is preferred.
  • Proven track record of success in developing and implementing fundraising strategies that have resulted in increased financial support.
  • Experience in grant writing, proposal development, and grant management.
  • Previous experience managing and leading a development team.
  • Experience in budget development and financial oversight.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector is a plus.
  • Passion for the mission and values of United Way.
  • Proven ability to always remain objective and discrete and exercise common sense.


  • Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and lead a team toward achieving fundraising goals.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with donors, board members, and other stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinking and planning skills to drive the organization's fundraising efforts.
  • Proficiency in using fundraising software and data analysis tools.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations related to fundraising and philanthropy.

The targeted hiring range for this position is $115-135K. Proffered salaries are determined by several factors including applicant’s knowledge, skills, experience, position, equity, and market. Please note, relocation assistance to Maui is not offered with this role.
