JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Director of Advancement is responsible for providing strategic and organizational leadership for the daily operations of the Advancement Department, including overseeing our leadership givers, Donor Advised Fund holders, database management and integrity, donor relations, prospect research, list generation, reporting and other related systems. The Director must be able to organize and prioritize the work of multiple projects, maintaining focus on details and meeting appropriate deadlines effectively and successfully. As we continue to plan for annual and future campaigns, this position will play an important role in its overall management and fundraising success.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Major Gifts, the Director will work closely with internal and external partners in advancing the work of and resources for United Way of Tucson by executing engagement and philanthropic goals. At this level of engagement, he/she/they must develop and maintain a very positive and professional customer service attitude.

Salary: $55,000 - $65,000

Responsibilities:
Advancement, Donor Cultivation and Stewardship
- Manages a portfolio of donors and prospective major donors by leading in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship; maintains current documentation of activity.
- Design, organize, direct, and implement strategies to segment, prospect, cultivate, solicit, and grow leadership and major givers.
- Support the Advancement Department including the Tocqueville Society- provide annual major gifts plan, help coordinate Tocqueville Committee and Tocqueville Events, create Tocqueville Welcome packets and Tocqueville Acknowledgement Webpage.
- Identify and renew relationships with inactive donors, lapsed and unattended campaigns.
- Cultivate and manage government and business leads and relationships in conjunction with the Chief Advancement Officer.
- Successfully manage the Women United Affinity Group to grow their membership numbers.
- Develop sponsorships and provide support for events.
- Ensure that collateral materials and recognition programs are timely, effective, and appropriate.
- Implement and coordinate an organization-wide comprehensive donor relations and stewardship system that appropriately and consistently promotes interaction with and recognition of donors at all levels, increasing donor acquisition and decreasing donor attrition.
- Work with Legacy Giving team to identify and develop Endowment and Planned Giving prospects.
Donor Advised Funds (DAF)
- Provide superior customer relationship management.
- Develop effective donor management programs to increase the share of dollars directed to United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona impact areas from current and new account holders.
- Develop and maintain effective communication plan that keeps account holders and prospects informed and involved with United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona.
- Ensure that collateral materials and account holder recognition programs are timely, effective and appropriate.
- Oversee administration of the DAF program to ensure proper customer service, including quarterly communications, and be knowledgeable regarding accounting and deployment of funds.
- Train the Resource Development Coordinator to support the Philanthropic Fund process.
Database Management
- Develop proactive strategies to constantly improve the integrity, database changes, address accuracy and interrelationships of data.
- In collaboration with the Gift Processing CRM Manager, has the responsibility of ensuring and maintaining the highest standards of data integrity for donors and other constituent records as needed in keeping the established policies and procedures.
- Serves as the departmental representative in charge of donor information systems (currently, Stratus Live; Foundant Community Suite) sharing, access, and report requests.
- Oversees prospect development tracking and establishes best practices for moves management by working with the AVP of Major Gifts to construct the necessary lists, reports and tracking tools to support fundraising efforts including data/benchmarking.
- Ensures that manuals related to business and procedural operations for areas such as data entry, gift entry, etc. are maintained and updated by staff members.
- At the direction of the AVP of Major Gifts, serves as the primary contact for regular operational purposes with both internal and external constituents.
Management and Administrative Functions
- Supports the Gift Processing CRM Manager in preparing direct mail lists, constituent lists, and reports for Advancement or other departments as requested. Maintain donor and prospect records and current files.
- Create, modify, and maintain routine and special letters, memos, and reports using word processing, database, spreadsheet, and other software packages.
- Assist AVP with timely planning and completion of necessary Campaign marketing strategies and materials to support success of annual goals and objectives.
- Perform duties in accordance with United Way policies and procedures such as managing/attending staff meetings, completing accurate and timely timesheets and expense reports.

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, communications or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Three to five years’ experience in resource development, donor relations or related field.
- Experience and success in managing relationships and securing support from accounts and individuals.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience and ability to motivate and manage staff, donors, and volunteers.
- Ability to tactfully handle stressful situations, negotiate and resolve conflicts, maintain confidentiality and to respect and observe organizational protocol.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, public speaking, training, facilitation, administrative and interpersonal skills.
- Event planning and management, accounting, budget development and management skills.
- Computer skills including CRM, Windows-based software (Word and Excel), e-mail and calendar, and presentation software.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, daily access to a reliable vehicle and able to lift up to 30 pounds.
