ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Volunteers In Service to America (VISTA) is a national service program, similar to PeaceCorps, except all members are placed at locations within the United States. AmeriCorps VISTA members build capacity in nonprofit organizations and public agencies to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at a local level, and empower individuals and communities. 

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Outreach Coordinator VISTA will build the capacity of Desert Spoon Food Hub’s food education program, Tasterspace. The VISTA will perform community outreach to recruit food-insecure families with school-aged children, coordinate pre- and post- food assessments and track communications of participants during the program period. The VISTA will increase awareness of the program, assist in engaging more families in the food education program, and build the capacity of Desert Spoon Food Hub in providing supplemental food benefit services to families, further reducing food insecurity.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Objective of the Assignment

Assist in building the Tasterspace Food Education Pilot encouraging engagement of 100 children and families. Improve program outcomes through enhanced communications, adaptability and engagement.

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Establish a database of program participants identifying key barriers to food security

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Coordinate with program manager and evaluation consultant at University of Texas at Houston-El Paso to schedule and conduct pre and post food assessments

Member Activity (09/12/2021 - 09/10/2022): Coordinate the distribution of weekly intervention and program materials.

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Establish communication system that ensures outreach with each participant/household, increasing reach of program

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Establish database of emergency-food supply resources by zip code and supplemental food benefit programs available to each participant.

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Develop a written plan of program adaptability and implementation in institutions and early childhood care facilities

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Attend community coalition meetings in regards to hunger relief and food security to report on new ideas and opportunities to the organization.

Develop an outreach and support system to increase awareness of the program and assist in engaging more families in the food education program.

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Assist Program Manager and Director of Public Relations with outreach and communication to partners and community

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Follow up with community partners in regards to collaboration with the organization to spread awareness of food education program.

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Create and obtain feedback via surveys, working with UT Health of Houston, from participants to ensure successful implementation of program

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Develop a document for frequently ask questions to be shared as a resource within the organization.

Objective of the Assignment

Develop and provide capacity building and community engagement to expand Tasterspace Program.

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Research best practices for the adaptability of Tasterspace in classroom and teacher-lead community sites.

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Develop materials for prospective community partners

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): In collaboration with staff and partners, create a plan for identifying community partnerships and onboarding other educational sites for program implementation

Member Activity (01/01/2022 - 09/10/2022): Develop plan for recruiting and materials for onboarding new program implementation sites.

 

AmeriCorps Members will receive (upon successful completion of program requirements):
A living allowance of $575.40 every two weeks.
Upon completion of a full year of service (12 months), the VISTA will have the option to receive an education award ($6,495) or cash stipend ($1,800)
A health insurance plan and SNAP eligibility
