Community Schools Coordinator

If you love building and maintaining relationships, organizing and collaborating with a variety of groups, and know how to “get things done,” then this position is for you. The Community School Coordinator at Erwin Middle School supports United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County’s (UWABC) vision of a united and resilient community where everyone belongs and everyone thrives. The Coordinator is a full-time employee of UWABC, but works 4 of 5 days at Erwin Middle School. Working within the Community Schools (CS) team, the Community School Coordinator works in concert with the school principal, parents and community leaders to promote the school’s vision and the school improvement plan. Bilingual candidates (English/Spanish) will be prioritized for this role.

Position is responsible for supporting student academic achievement by addressing barriers to necessary services and supports, promoting active family and community engagement, and enabling more efficient and effective use of key resources.  


  • Address school and community needs by engaging a School Resource Team comprised of a large cross-section of each school district’s community (e.g. faith-based organizations, local business, families, nonprofits) 

  • Partner with UWABC departments to build capacity of the community schools initiative

  • Facilitate an annual community school assets and needs assessment

    • Lead community conversations and surveys with key stakeholders

    • Utilize the assessment to guide the work of the Resource Team, including potential program investments

  • Support the school’s Early Warning and Response System (EWRS)

    • Serve on key school teams focused on student attendance, behaviors and academic performance

    • Represent community-based organizations and individual volunteers at the school level

    • Build capacity and infrastructure to link students with beneficial services

    • Share best practices between the school and community-based organizations and volunteers

  • Support student achievement 

    • Work with school administration and staff to create a positive learning environment

    • Identify and connect students to quality in-school and out-of-school time programs and volunteer services

    • Support transition year initiatives

  • Support school faculty and staff 

    • In conjunction with UWABC’s Community Engagement Team, recruit volunteers to support before, during and after-school priorities

    • Serve on pertinent school teams such as the School Improvement Team

    • Promote faculty and staff appreciation efforts

  • Engage and support parents and families 

    • Work with school administration and staff to create a welcoming environment for parents and families

    • Host weekly Community Nights and other family events

    • Coordinate ongoing educational and skill-building opportunities for parents and adult community members

  • Serve as an active member of the Asheville Buncombe United for Youth Network 

    • Participate in monthly workgroups and ongoing professional development

    • Establish and facilitate systems to share information and strategies with school faculty, staff and volunteers

  • Collect and organize required data for evaluation and continuous quality improvement

    • Communicate progress

    • Monitor timeline and budget

    • Develop partnership protocols and manage service agreements

    • Write and produce reports required by UWABC, grantees, school district and the Asheville Buncombe United for Youth Network

  • Other related duties and responsibilities

    • Provide programmatic supervision to an assigned intern(s) from a local university

    • Manage an operations budget

    • Serve on relevant UWABC committees and community groups/collaboratives

    • Perform other related tasks as assigned or approved based on professional interests, to support the mission of UWABC

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Social Service or other related field, or 4 years of relevant experience, training and/or education

  • Experience in education and/or youth development, preferably with middle school aged youth

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a complex and collaborative environment with cross-sector teams and partners

  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License with a driving record that meets insurance requirements

  • Deep commitment to UWABC's guiding principles and ability to model those principles

Technical Skills, Abilities and Other Requirements

  • Technological proficiency with computers and software, including prior working knowledge of Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office applications

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and use a variety of software platforms and new skills 

  • Ability to review and critique multiple organizational sets of data, both qualitative and quantitative

  • Understanding of the public education system and local youth service organizations

  • Demonstrated experience with group facilitation

  • Previous experience with volunteer recruitment and management, program development and evaluation

  • Skilled in public speaking 

  • Works well independently and on teams 

  • Comfort facilitating complex conversations both 1:1 and in groups of all sizes

  • Holds self and other team members accountable for achieving results

  • Prior experience implementing events

Nice to Have

  • Bilingual abilities (English/Spanish) strongly preferred 

  • Understanding of Asheville and Buncombe County school systems and youth service organizations

  • Experience with any of the following (or similar): Salesforce, Airtable, PowerBI, and PowerSchool or other school data/information systems

This position is exempt from overtime regulations. Typical work hours at the school are 7:30 AM-4:00 PM.

Reports To: School Partnerships Manager

Supervises: 1 or more interns

Hours: 40/week 

Salary and Benefits: $43,273 to $48,081 annually plus full benefits, including: paid vacation, sick and personal leave; employer contributions to 401(k); contributions to health, dental and vision insurance benefits; self-care fund, life and disability insurance; and coaching and support.
