JOB TITLE:            Community Navigator
SUPERVISOR:        Executive Vice President of Neighborhood Centers

The United Way of St. Joseph County is partnering with other local organizations to build neighborhood centers within St Joseph County.  These centers will offer full-day, year-round, high-quality services to members of the community.  Within these centers, childcare, after-school programming, health care, and other supportive services will be available on-site.  In addition to these on-site resources, neighborhood centers will have staff available to assist community members through connecting individual needs to available resources within the community.  The goal of these neighborhood centers is to bring resources to communities that lack them and to put some of the most widely needed resources all under one roof to improve accessibility for the community the neighborhood center supports.

The community navigator will be under direct supervision of the Vice President of Neighborhood Centers, or designee.  The incumbent in the navigator role will be responsible for connecting individuals with resources necessary to meet their needs whenever possible.  The ultimate focus of the Community Navigator is to improve access to resources for individuals and families with a goal of establishing self-sufficiency.

•    Initial expected operating hours of the Community Navigator      program:  Monday through Friday; 7am to 7pm with occasional pre-planned weekend event coverage
•    Responsible for establishing trusting relationships with individuals while promoting general support and encouragement
•    Assists individuals through successful navigation to needed resources
•    Maintain a complete and working knowledge of community resources available to individuals
•    Establish and maintain records of available resources and instructions for connecting community members with these resources for the use of all navigators
•    Participate in orientation and training of new staff
•    Participate in team meetings and offer meaningful constructive feedback to improve teamwork and effectiveness of the Neighborhood Center at meeting the needs of the community
•    Establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with community-based organizations, clientele, and co-workers
•    Assist with community education, enrollment sessions, and other community events as requested
•    Work with the Vice President of Neighborhood Centers, co-workers, and community partners to identify opportunities to advance service of the community
•    May require weekend hours

•    Other duties as assigned

•    High school diploma or GED required
•    Two years of directly applicable prior experience assisting individuals in a charitable organization is desirable
•    Strong self-motivation with the ability to stay on-task when working independently
•    Capacity to maintain strict confidentiality
•    Ability and desire to maintain strong working relationships with a tight-knit team is required
•    Passion for working in the community
•    Ability to lift 25lb
