Communications Specialist

The Communications Specialist works under the direction of the Vice President of Communications within the Marketing Department to help develop and execute communications for United Way and its family of brands, such as United Way 2-1-1 and the Volunteer Center.

General Responsibilities: 

  • Write and edit solicitation emails and letters to various donor and stakeholder groups
  • Write and edit media materials
  • Ideation of news stories and pitches
  • Assist in planning and coordinating media opportunities and interviews
  • Produce monthly and yearly reports and recaps that show communication and media activities
  • Write and edit long-form and short-form success stories as assigned
  • Provide communications and writing support during crisis
  • Proofread emails, letters, proposals, presentations, speeches, etc.
  • Take photos at events
  • Support internal communications
  • Contributes to the overall success of United Way and the marketing department by preforming other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned

Key Accountabilities: 

  • Write compelling press releases, media kits, background materials, talking points, etc.
  • Write speeches, letters, emails, blog posts and other communications designed to reach stakeholders and communicate a specific call to action
  • Writing or ghost-writing editorials, letters to the editor, articles, etc.
  • Monitoring reputation both online and offline

KSA (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • A minimum of two years experience
  • Exceptional writing skills: for media, B2B, B2C, and AP style
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, communication, public relations or similar field strongly preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Additional skills in: editing, communications, media pitching, public speaking, crisis management, online marketing, social media, and creative thinking
  • Ability to take direction and work closely with a team
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks
