Purpose of Position:

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will share responsibility with the President (CEO) in managing specific operations and strategies of UWNEFL, assisting the President in governance and corporate administrative matters, including business/strategic planning and organizational change efforts.  The COO will provide supervision and oversight to staff teams and departments, in addition to representing the organization in the CEO’s absence in public meetings, events and with volunteers and other stakeholders to further United Way’s interests.

 

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Serve as strategic advisor to the President in supporting the vision and execution of the strategic plan and annual budget.
  • Provide leadership and support to the Human Resources Director in the implementation of HR strategic objectives including development and implementation of a professional development, career path, compensation plan, and recruitment strategies/initiatives.  Serve as the culture champion creating a positive work environment that attracts and retains talent.
  • Oversee and manage Information Technology staff and operations.  Serve as the Team Leader with the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Development Officer to ensure coordination, excellence, and efficiency for internal and external customer service in technology support.  In partnership with IT staff and community leaders as needed, develop an IT plan that ensures United Way has the IT resources needed to effectively, and securely, implement its strategic plan.  Identify new IT solutions as United Way innovates to better serve and engage donors, community partners, and volunteers in accomplishing United Way’s stated goals.
  • Provide leadership and support to the Head of Basic Needs in the implementation of 211, 988, and Mission United including information technology support and team training and development.  Partner with the Vice President of Community Impact, Head of Basic Needs, government leaders, and community organizations to ensure residents of Northeast Florida’s basic needs are met.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to the RealSense Prosperity Campaign ensuring that goals including grant objectives are met, resources to operate the initiative are secured, and services are provided in locations of greatest need through community partnerships.  Work with RealSense leadership to develop a strategy for maximum impact.
  • Support the Vice President of Community Impact to ensure grant-making processes are effective and efficient.
  • Supervise the Operations Manager and Front Desk Administrative staff.  In partnership with the Leadership Team, develop a plan to address administrative needs of the organization.
  • Serve on the Leadership Team and support the President in creating agendas and leading team building efforts to provide a united, visible, and positive presence across the organization.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive, productive relationships with board members, volunteers, community and business leaders, investors, stakeholders, employees, agencies, and partners.
  • Maintain knowledge of general business trends in philanthropy, legislative activity, technology, investors, and competitors to evaluate impact to the organization and the adjustment of strategies and plans.  

 

Experience/Position Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in a related field preferred.
  • Ten plus years of administrative/executive management experience, preferably with responsibilities for multi-faceted strategic planning and direction.
  • Excellent broad based business background with knowledge and experience in organizational development, continuous quality improvement, and business compliance requirements, preferably with background in each of the managed functions.
  • Demonstrated executive and administrative capability including organizational development and change management experience.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills, and an ability to anticipate and develop appropriate recommendations consistent with the desired work environment.
  • Outstanding energetic leadership, strategic vision and big picture perspective.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to create the internal communication systems needed to engage and build staff ownership of the organization’s goals and objectives at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to motivate, coach, and develop key executives and volunteers to meet the organization’s short- and long-range goals and objectives including identifying issues and developing solutions.
  • Business savvy, with creative, innovative, critical, and forward-thinking skills.
  • Appreciation of technology and how it can transform business objectives.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to assume a leadership role while establishing effective working relationships with a broad cross-section of staff and volunteers in a culturally sensitive and respectful manner.
  • Previous volunteer and/or work experience in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors is desirable.
