How You'll Help

As a key member of the executive management team, the Chief Impact Officer (CIO) will work closely with the CEO and Executive Team to develop, lead and implement Mile High United Way's program strategy to advance our mission and create sustainable community impact. The CIO will oversee the portfolio of programs, grants and related services, engaging with the community, government and business leaders and Mile High United Way teams to ensure the continuous evaluation, learning and effectiveness of programs, supported by a diversified and sustained funding model. The CIO will represent Mile High United Way, engage regularly with the Board of Trustees, collaborate as a peer on the Executive Team and lead the Community Impact Division team

Essential Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership

  • In coordination with the President and CEO and executive team, be a key leader in the overall development, strategic planning, service delivery, and management of the organization.
  • Align the team around new strategies and innovative approaches to deepen and accelerate Mile High United Way's impact.
  • Serve as a thought partner to the Executive Team to evolve the programmatic vision and Mile High United Way's role as a community leader to advance equity and economic opportunity.
  • Catalyze community connections, engagement and partnerships to ensure that efforts to address systemic challenges are informed by the voices and ideas of key stakeholders.
  • Lead the Organization in measuring outcomes of programs, partnerships and investments.

Community Investment Division Leadership

  • Lead the Organization's Community Investment Division and its initiatives across the seven-county Denver metro area to address long-term community change by testing ideas and strategies that offer efficient, effective, and sustainable solutions to social problems.
  • Advance the organization's work to reach community impact goals in the strategies of United Neighborhoods which is focuses on serving communities that have been under-resourced, with the main focuses on early care and education, helping families and students succeed in early elementary school, and assisting small business development.  This strategy also focuses on the needs of young people who have aged out of the child welfare system with our program Bridging the Gap.  Wrap around services are provided by our 211 network of services assisting people with basis human services needs throughout the state of Colorado.
  • Advance the vision of Mile High United Way's 2-1-1 Center through new partnerships and models that add continued value to the community.
  • Develop, motivate and inspire staff to work collaboratively toward vision and goal, by clearly communicating the organization's vision, facilitating opportunities for staff's professional development and growth, and mentoring. This is done in conjunction with program staff, community leaders, partners, investors, stakeholders, and Board members.
  • Oversee the coordination, integration, and delivery of all contracts and related services, promoting collaborative relationships between program areas and ensuring that the expectations of funders, partners, constituents, clients, and other stakeholders are consistently met.

Financial and Development Leadership

  • Serve as a public face and key spokesperson for Mile High United Way, representing the organization with credibility and compassion, and clearly communicating its vision and value proposition.
  • Partner closely with Development to drive participation in Mile High United Way's initiatives as investment opportunities for funders' government, individual, foundation or business sector partners ' helping meet fundraising goals to increase the resources available to support strategies and programs
  • Continue to deepen relationships with diverse community stakeholders (nonprofit, for profit and public sector leaders, other institutional and individual philanthropists, and public officials) to advance initiatives, partnerships and increase investments.

Personal Leadership

  • Work collaboratively to build relationships around shared goals across sectors and stakeholder groups to achieve a community-centered agenda.
  • Gain the confidence and trust of others through principled leadership, leading by example, and sound business ethics.

What You'll Need


  • A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience is required; an advanced degree in community planning, public administration or public policy is preferred.


  • 10+ years' experience in human service planning, cross system issues, resource management, programmatic evaluation, advocacy and public policy.
  • At least 5 years of executive experience (preferred)
  • Previous experience managing a diverse team and achieving measurable impact in support of the organization's broader impact goals.
  • Demonstrated success in community building and implementation of community-based initiatives, collaborating with and convening multiple, diverse community partners in efforts that produce specific deliverable and measurable outcomes.
  • Experience in advocacy and public policy efforts.

Special Skills & Knowledge

  • Demonstrated capacity to lead, inspire and mobilize people around a complex set of challenges.
  • Operational Excellence and the ability to manage multiple, complex projects with various stakeholders and within established timelines.
  • Knowledge of research-based practices in human services and deep understanding of local and national issues and trends.
  • Excellent oral communication and writing skills, including presentations, written reports, grant applications and other documents.
  • Significant experience with program development, budgeting, outcome measurement and contract/grant management

Computer Skills

  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other related software

Working Environment: Typical office environment, with frequent outside meetings.

Physical Activities: Ability to provide personal transportation, ability to operate a computer for extended periods.
