Associate Vice President (AVP), Justice & Opportunity

Position Description:  

Reporting to the Vice President of Justice & Opportunity for UWNYC, the Associate Vice President (AVP) will have a leadership role with internal and external stakeholders, in the strategic development and implementation of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice’s (MOCJ) Office of Neighborhood Safety (ONS) expansion partnership. The AVP will support the focus of our partnership to invest in communities to increase safety and enhance networks central to community well-being by: 

  • Assist and/or manage programmatic partnerships and relationships with stakeholders and grassroot community-based organization (CBO) partners working closely with leaders, program staff, and other collaborators to ensure program success 
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community and strategic partners 
  • Support staff and community partners with on-the-ground technical assistance and capacity building 
  • Facilitate convening and learning opportunities with StrengthenNYC team for ONS partners in order to identify emerging challenges, program needs, and areas for additional or new capacity building support 
  • Plan and facilitate convenings and trainings in partnership with the StrengthenNYC team and other collaborators as needed 
  • Work closely with UWNYC’s CBO partners, funders, and other stakeholders to consistently refine the network’s collective approach to addressing the root causes of challenges, proposing, and mobilizing changes in strategy when appropriate 

Job Responsibilities: 

Strategic Leadership: 

  • Work closely with the VP of Justice and Opportunity in the articulation of program strategy, vision, and goals for the Justice & Opportunity unit overall and guide ONS work specifically. 
  • Work with other Senior Leaders at UWNYC where needed to ensure program strategy, vision, and goals for the Justice and Opportunity Unit are implemented. 
  • Assist in identifying and designing initiatives in alignment with UWNYC’s mission, vision, and values. 
  • Assist in plan to best establish research and evaluation frameworks and processes.  
  • Work with MOCJ/ONS leadership to manage the strategic objectives and vision of the program.  
  • Participate in the Community Impact Leaders team managing high-level relationships with the StrengthenNYC team (community and capacity building) as well as the Transformation & Learning team (performance measurement and continuous improvement).  
  • Work closely with peers in the Resource Development and Marketing and Communications Departments to ensure strategic alignment between Justice & Opportunity programs and fundraising and communications objectives. 
  • Work closely with Finance and Administration leadership to assist in managing the Justice & Opportunity budget, oversight of key procurement and budgeting decisions.  
  • Assist in managing the Senior Manager of Justice & Opportunity and oversee external consultants.  

External Relations: 

  • Assist in overseeing the relationship with the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ), working closely with their Office of Neighborhood Safety leadership, program staff, contracting and finance staff to ensure program success.   
  • Assist in overseeing relationships with Atlas community-based organization (CBO) partners/ subcontractors, government agency stakeholders, and other key stakeholders within the criminal justice system.  
  • Assist in overseeing relationships with therapeutic model experts and support CBOs with on-the-ground technical assistance and capacity building to ensure model fidelity, lead convenings and trainings.  
  • Assist in representing UWNYC Justice & Opportunity in community gatherings, Board meetings, funder meetings, speaking events, press and media opportunities, and other external outlets.  

Skills, Knowledge and Experience: 

  • Position requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred, in criminal justice, public administration, community engagement, or other related field preferable; minimum 8 years of  progressively responsible positions in community program management, including: 
    • Facilitation and management of programs in at risk communities 
    • Project design, implementation, and evaluation
    • People management
  • Excellent writing, editing, verbal, and presentation skills 
  • Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and results 
  • Deep understanding of criminal justice system, stakeholders, agencies, and providers; context within New York City preferred 
  • Demonstrated experience building, leading, and mentoring a team of program specialists, both internal and external 
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills 
  • Superior management skills, including the ability to advocate for and manage to budget priorities 
  • Presence and confidence to project credibility to community partners, the Board, donors, and other strategic stakeholders 
  • A passion for UWNYC’s mission, vision, and accomplishments
