The Assistant Controller will direct the workflow for the monthly and annual closing process, reconciliation preparation and review, and financial reporting duties in the organization.  This role will involve a great deal of technical detail, a deep understanding of the fundamentals of accounting, significant documentation of processes and internal controls, and coordination of the timing of resources and deliverables within the Accounting department.  The role will own the administration for all software applications, platforms and systems used by the accounting team.  Supervises two senior accountants, an accounting assistant and a temporary staff as needed.

The recruiting salary range is $79,500 to $83,500 – DOE. This position is open until filled; first consideration will be given to applications received within two weeks of posting.

Essential Duties:

  • Supervises the monthly general ledger closing process
  • Reviews and approves balance sheet account reconciliations from other team members, and prepares several reconciliations for Controller review
  • Prepares financial statements for internal use and distribution to management, including the Statement of Activities and Statement of Financial Position
  • Monitors internal controls, processes, and accounting procedures and implements improvements as needed
  • Supports Federal, State and Local Governmental Grants for compliance with Uniform Guidance, and performs related accounting and reporting functions
  • Primary Administrator for accounting software platforms and applications including general ledger and other systems.
  • Coordinates with external audit firm, and prepares Accounting team for annual audit
  • Prepares and reviews various general ledger journal entries to support monthly and year-end closing. Reviews and posts journal entries.
  • Researches, analyzes, and documents accounting transactions & resolves accounting discrepancies.
  • Prepares and analyzes financial statements for internal use and distribution to management, including the Statement of Activities and Statement of Financial Position
  • Prepares and Reviews various general ledger journal entries to support monthly and year-end closing. Reviews and posts journal entries
  • Researches and documents accounting transactions & resolves accounting discrepancies.
  • Prepares and processes various government reports such as Census reports, City, County and State required annual or quarterly reports.
  • Verifies deposits against internal control documents and prepares ad hoc reports and analyses of data as requested by management
  • Thoughtfully works with teams to resolve issues, including competing demands, sensitive situations, and conflicts with other groups.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, specializing in accounting or related field. Must have at least three years’ general accounting experience with an emphasis on general ledger processing and financial reporting. Keen understanding of accounting flows/debits/credits. Experience in a non-profit environment, helpful. Supervisory experience required. 

Experience and understanding of systemic and institutional racial bias; sensitivity to issues and concerns of communities of color and other diverse groups including working with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds highly desired.  Deep passion for creating an inclusive and equitable work environment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Intermediate knowledge of professional accounting principles, practices, and methods in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and non-profit accounting
  • Basic math skills, intermediate Microsoft office skills and computerized accounting systems experience with general ledger/report writing software including Microsoft Dynamics (Solomon); FRx, Management Reporter or other report writing software such as Enterprise, preferred.
  • Solid working knowledge of relational databases, Solomon experience desired
  • Strong analytical, research and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and projects while meeting assigned deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with frequent interruptions and ability to shift work priorities quickly

JOB CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The position requires the ability to oversee staff performance and in meeting organizational goals. Job involves a high degree of complexity and difficulty.   Responsible for developing and implementing operational policies and procedures to accomplish team objectives. Accountable for a team approach to strategic planning. Decisions are made within a flexible team operating structure, which often requires both independent decision-making and making decisions through a collaborative process. Position works under constant time requirements and constraints.

Work is performed in an office environment. Normal office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Position works under constant time requirements/ constraints. 

Physical activities required by the work include sitting, talking, hearing, reaching, and using repetitive motions of hands/wrists.
